| Hurricane Andrew was devastating when it hit South Florida in 1992. Wind Speeds up to 155 mph killed 43 people, destroyed 130,000 homes and caused $30 billion in damage. A change was needed to limit the physical damage and destruction created by high winds and buildings. The Florida Building Codes Study Commission was formed in 1996 to review the existing codes and recommend ways to improve them. The final version was signed into law by the 2000 Florida legislature and went into effect on March 1, 2002 as the Florida Building Code. In order to be labeled impact-resistant, doors must undergo a rigorous testing procedure. Doors are tested for air and water leakage, structural pressure, forced entry and impact resistance. The door is installed in a testing chamber then a 2x4 stud is shot out of a canon at the center or corner of the glazing to simulate flying debris. Then with no repairs or adjustments, the impacted doors are subjected to 9,000 cycles of positive and negative wind loads to certify that the product can still survive hurricane-force winds.
